An obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), is an anxiety disorder characterized by intrusive, recurrent and persistent thoughts that produce anxiety, apprehension, fear or concern and repetitive behaviors called compulsions.
Contamination OCD is a well-known subset of OCD whereby sufferers are terrified that they might become contaminated by germs or get sick.
The most common obsession associated with Contamination OCD is fearing you’ll get a terminal illness like AIDS or cancer.
For this reason, suffering from this obsessive/compulsive disorder implies that normal activities, like touching a door handle or sharing a glass of water, may lead to severe anxiety or even a panic attack.
Furthermore, the sufferer will not just fear being contaminated, but they will also fear that those other people touching those objects may also be contaminated.
We should also clarify that this type of OCD is very well-known around the world, and that many times, it is associated with a trauma or abuse history.
